“Just like the space shuttle provided a unique perspective for scientists to understand space, Cyclops 1 provides our only opportunity for direct human observation of these deep-sea environments.”
– SeaDoc Science Director, Joe Gaydos
OceanGate Foundation is proud to support marine science
OceanGate Foundation is proud to support the science and technology that allow us to better understand our oceans. Cheers to SeaDoc Society and the University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs for a great week of Inspiration Through Exploration! Three science teams took part in the expedition that:
Studied the Pacific sand lance which burrow into the sand waves in San Juan Channel just south of Friday Harbor,
Searched for evidence of trawl scars from light scientific trawling in San Juan Channel,
Searched for deep dwelling populations of red urchins off of Lime Kiln Point. All three teams came away with meaningful insights and discoveries.
As part of the weeklong expedition, UW Friday Harbor Labs hosted a very well-attended public outreach event which gave attendees a close-up view of OceanGate Inc’s Cyclops 1 submersible. The participating scientists presented their findings and advocated for greater understanding of the marine life in the Salish Sea.
